Great Northern Steam Locomotive

Class Systems

The Great Northern Railway went through two different class systems for its steam locomotives. The Original (Old) Class system was largely based on the order in which locomotives were received, and was in such not very easy to use. The Modern GN Steam Locomotive Class System, introduced in 1903, made things more transparent as it was based on the wheel arrangement of the engine.
